SUPPORT AT HOME – MY AGED CARE
You can access music therapy and art therapy using your Support at Home package
Support at Home gives you a budget you’ll be able to use for government supported in-home services.
There are 8 different levels of funding, ranging from level 1 to level 8, that help determine how much support you will be able to access.
Music Therapy and Art Therapy can be accessed by anyone with funding level 4 and above.
Music Therapy can be accessed under the category of Clinical supports – Allied health and other therapeutic services – Music therapist.
Art Therapy can be accessed under the category of Independence – Therapeutic services for independent living – Art therapist.
Both Art Therapy and Music Therapy are classified as Clinical Services, which means they are Fully Government Funded.
Once your Support at Home package has been approved and you have chosen a service provider, you can let your service provider know that you would like to access art therapy and/or music therapy at Newcastle Music & Art Therapy.
Your service provider will get in touch with us on your behalf, and then all you’ll need to do is fill out our referral form – we’ll take care of the rest!
Requirements for Registered Music Therapists (RMTs) and Registered Art Therapists (AThR)
To be registered, a music therapist or art therapist must be able to provide evidence of their qualifications and relevant registrations (with the Australian Music Therapy Association – AMTA, or Australian, New Zealand and Asian Creative Arts Therapies Association – ANZACATA), and be able to demonstrate that they have ongoing professional/clinician supervision and development in place.
While there are many different ways to use music or art therapeutically, only art therapists and music therapists that have undertaken a Masters degree and maintain their registration can deliver creative arts therapy services as an allied health professional.
We love music lessons, art lessons, music and art groups, and community creative arts activities, and we encourage you to get involved in music and art in any way that you can! At the same time, there are some important differences between music and art as activities and music therapy and art therapy, particularly in the way they are delivered.
Rather than focusing on the learning of a skill, or the participation in an activity, our therapists tailor sessions to your individual needs and are trained to use art or music to help you build skills to improve all areas of your life. Our main focus is on having a safe space to experiment, be curious, and express without fear of judgment or expectation.
At Newcastle Music & Art Therapy, we’re all about creating a space where everyone feels welcome and valued. We are a neuroaffirming practice, proudly support people with disabilities, LGBTQIA+ folks, and Indigenous peoples.
It’s important to us that everyone feels included, heard and seen. We’re here to break down barriers, celebrate our differences, and make sure everyone can be themselves and shine.
Newcastle Music & Art Therapy operates on Awabakal country. We acknowledge the Awabakal people as the traditional custodians of the Warners Bay region and pay our respects to Awabakal elders past and present.
We are committed to a positive future for the Aboriginal community.
